After You Land: Where to go from São Paulo in Spring

São Paulo's Guarulhos Airport is LATAM's biggest hub, and one of South America's main airports, meaning having GRU as your port of entry will make your life so much easier.

That said, here's what I'd do each month of spring in São Paulo — after going for a drink at Caracol, obviously :-)

Travel in March

  • within Brazil — if Rio de Janeiro is on your list (and it definitely should be!), March makes an excellent month to tick the cidade maravilhosa off. Carnival crowds will be gone, but the summery golden sunsets will still be there, maybe even tinting those March waters closing the season.
  • within South America — as summer winds down, Patagonia's lenga forests are carpets of gold and red hues, with a soft autumnal light lighting the trails. There's no better time to visit if you'd rather avoid the crowds.

Travel in April

  • within Brazil — with the wet season coming to an end, you'll find the Amazonian rivers at their fullest and thriving with wildlife. Get ready for a lot of canoe & fishing time, since the walking trails still won't be available at this time of year.
  • within South America — since Easter falls in April this year, embrace Holy Week madness in Peru or Ecuador. During this time, Cusco and Quito come alive with colourful processions and local traditions.

GRU

Travel in May

  • within Brazil — as the summer rains calm down, the Lençois Maranhenses's turquoise lagoons are at their fullest, and the scarlet ibises nest just next to the dunes. Plus, no big crowds in sight.
  • within South America — the end of the rainy season means plenty of baby animals make their first appearance in the Galápagos Islands. From sea turtles hatching, to baby iguanas taking their first steps, wildlife aficionados get their fair share this time of the year. Plus, that's when blue footed boobies show off their colourful dancing shoes!

Travel in June

  • within Brazil — little rain, fewer mosquitoes, and high jaguar density make June an excellent month to visit the world's largest wetland. Make sure to learn this song because you'll spot pleeeeeeenty of these cuties on the road.
  • within South America — the nights in the Atacama Desert are cold and clear at this time of the year, providing brilliant conditions for stargazing and astrophotography. Plus, the mild daytime temperatures, and the wildflower in bloom, make hiking much more manageable.
