Will EES Give You Border Control Nightmares This Summer?

Hey there, Traveller! Great topic, and very timely too.&nbsp;
Since October 2025, countries in the Schengen Zone have been rolling out the EU Entry/Exit System (EES). By collecting your biometric data upon arrival (photo &amp; fingerprints), countries within the zone are aiming to track visitors more consistently and ensure that nobody is overstaying their welcome.&nbsp;
This doesn&rsquo;t feel like anything new in terms of border control techniques (I&rsquo;ve been attempting not to make silly faces in photos at international borders for years), so you&rsquo;d think it wouldn&rsquo;t be a big deal. However, when you try to get <a href="https://travel-europe.europa.eu/ees/what-is-the-ees">29 countries</a> to roll out one system across 500+ airports, all major ferry ports, land border crossings, etc., things get a little complicated.
Anyone entering the Schengen area on a non-EU passport will now need to go through the process of biometric checks upon arrival. Well,&nbsp;probably.&nbsp;
Like you, reader, airports and border control agents are getting anxious about the surge in summer visitors possibly leading to utter chaos at immigration. For that reason, the EU has confirmed that, although April 9th is still the legal deadline for implementation, all countries have the <a href="https://etias.com/articles/eu-entry/exit-system-full-implementation-still-april-9,-with-flexibility">ability to pause the EES checks</a> for up to 90 days after that date. They&rsquo;ve also given the possibility of a further 60-day extension on that, with early September as the final final deadline.
All that to say, you may not even have to deal with the new EES system upon your arrival in Kos. But if you do, there&rsquo;s no knowing whether it&rsquo;ll be hellish or plain sailing. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/jacksflightclub/permalink/2734116543610856/">We asked our Facebook community</a> for their experiences so far, and it really was a mixed bag.

&ldquo;Been through Faro (where we did our prints and photos done on the way in) and Rome Ciampino. In Rome when I scanned my passport an official told me to go with him, I was a bit worried but it was just to get my passport stamped and I went straight through. Unfortunately because he was dealing with me, he missed my husband who had to go through the whole process and was almost last through! Teething problems!&rdquo; - Fiona

&ldquo;When I went to Spain, there were some new, very confusing lines, and none of the staff really knew which queues to put people in. When I got to the desk at the front, a grumpy man told me to look into the camera, then do my fingerprints, and that was it. It took around 30-40 minutes, I think, but that was mostly down to the lack of organization; they had people switching queues constantly.&rdquo; - Lauren

&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve been through various, and I think depends upon destination. Montpellier in France is a regular trip, and time-wise for me at least, nothing is out of the ordinary. Did experience about an hour delay at Prague, where they seemed to be struggling, and it took about 40 mins at CDG Paris.&rdquo; - Simon

&ldquo;We went through with Eurostar in Paris on Wednesday. It was fine and quick for me, but then our train was delayed because so many people, who had arrived at the time the email and tickets told them to arrive, were stuck in big queues at security.
I think, to be honest, it was the bag scanning that slowed it down there, as the staff manning that section could not have been less helpful.&rdquo; - Danielle

&ldquo;Scanner took a while to scan the passport, and the fingerprint scanner didn't work at all no matter how hard or soft you pressed! (Leeds/Bradford) so had to go the usual route anyway, and the queue was enormous!! So it wasn&rsquo;t just us that had a problem.&rdquo; - Jules

&ldquo;A nightmare in Lanzarote. Not clear what to do. Those that didn't scan their passports couldn't then get through passport control at the gate. All UK flights were delayed last night.&rdquo; - Anon

&ldquo;Scanners "down" at Lanzarote on way in and took ages to get them back up, so there were big queues. There was no one easily found to ask questions of, and I could see that some of the questions might take some folk down rabbit holes&rdquo; - Karen

The main thing I&rsquo;m taking away from all these stories is that it really varies wildly from airport to airport. Anyone arriving in the Schengen Zone on a non-Schengen passport this summer should plan to queue for at least 30 minutes at border control. If the EES system is in use, many people will be going through for the first time and will need to register their details, causing delays. If it&rsquo;s not in use, you&rsquo;ll still have to wait for a manual check and/or stamping.&nbsp;
If you&rsquo;re on a tight schedule, book seats close to the front of the plane so you&rsquo;re first off. Don&rsquo;t stop to use the facilities on your way&mdash;plan ahead and use the toilet on the plane before landing. And it&rsquo;s always worth making sure you have your roaming or eSIM sorted in advance so you can keep on top of your transport plans during delays.
Waiting in a line for hours isn&rsquo;t fun for anyone; however, I would suggest doing your best to go into the situation expecting it but not dreading it. It is what it is, and it will be over eventually. That sentiment may be particularly beneficial for anyone heading to Lanzarote, it seems!
But if you&rsquo;re lucky, reader, Kos will have you through border control in under ten minutes, and you&rsquo;ll be sailing off into the Grecian sunset in no time.

It&rsquo;s worth noting that the EES system is linked to the new <a href="https://travel-europe.europa.eu/etias/about-etias/what-is-etias">Electronic Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS)</a> in Europe, similar to the <a href="https://www.gov.uk/eta">Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)</a> that the UK brought in this week. While visitors to the UK need an ETA already, ETIAS will only be necessary from late 2026 and won&rsquo;t be a problem for your August trip. However, keep an eye out for updates if you&rsquo;re travelling again later in the year.

Since Poland is in the Schengen zone, the entry rules are the same as many other countries in Europe. If you're traveling with&hellip;

<h2 dir="ltr">Cash &amp; Currency</h2>
The currency in Poland is the złoty (PLN or zł) and at the time of publishing (July 2025), 10 złoty is worth around $2.75/&pound;2. That'll get you a cheap local beer in a bar away from the main square, or a few&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tastingtable.com/990842/obwarzanek-krakowski-the-polish-bread-thats-confused-with-a-bagel/">obwarzanek&nbsp;</a>from a street vendor.
The majority of bars, caf&eacute;s, restaurants, and shops will accept both card and cash payments. However, change may be useful when paying at more rural shops, markets and public toilets.
Polish złoty is not a closed currency, so you can exchange money outside the country before you travel. However, there are plenty of ATMs across Krak&oacute;w, so we&rsquo;d recommend withdrawing what you need once you are there.

Krak&oacute;w is a relatively easy city to reach by air globally. It has one main airport, Krak&oacute;w John Paul II International (KRK), which has non-stop routes from the UK and mainland Europe with Wizz Air, Ryanair, and national carriers, as well as New York and Chicago with LOT Polish Airlines. Otherwise, you&rsquo;ll find plenty of connecting flights from other major US cities, and Canada.

Winter is cold and snowy in Krak&oacute;w, with temperatures often dropping below 0 &deg;C/32 &deg;F, so make sure to pack warm, waterproof clothes. The <a href="https://krakowchristmas.com/">Christmas markets</a> open towards the end of November, but fair warning, they can get quite busy. For a quieter experience, come in January&ndash;February. You'll find fewer crowds and, with any luck, a city still blanketed in a magical dusting of snow.&nbsp;

March can still feel chilly, but the city quickly warms up to around 20 &deg;C/68 &deg;F by May. As spring arrives, you'll see outdoor caf&eacute;s eagerly setting up their tables, flowers bursting into bloom, and locals flocking to&nbsp;<a href="https://krakowairport.pl/blog/en/parki-w-krakowie-oazy-zieleni-z-historia/">sun-dappled parks</a> to savor the warmth.
Easter is one of the most important events in the Polish calendar, when families carry baskets overflowing with intricately decorated symbolic food to church to be blessed before Easter brunch. But beware &mdash; Easter Monday (Śmigus-Dyngus) is no ordinary day; the streets erupt into laughter and chaos as the traditional <a href="https://culture.pl/en/article/smigus-dyngus-polands-national-water-fight-day">day-long water fight</a> breaks out!

<h3 dir="ltr">June&ndash;August (summer)</h3>
Summer is by far the peak tourist season in Krak&oacute;w, with temperatures averaging between 20 &deg;C-30&deg;C/68 &deg;F-86 &deg;F.
<a href="https://barkaarkadia.pl/en/">Floating bars and caf&eacute;s</a> pop up along the Vistula River, and parks tend to smell more like barbecue than florals.
You'll find the city at its fullest over summer, so nearby lakes and the mountainous Zakopane region are popular spots to head when you need to cool off and catch some fresh air. See the &lsquo;Day Trips&rsquo; section below for ideas of places to visit.

In the heat of the summer, head to the recently regenerated limestone quarry in Zakrzowek, 3 km from Wawel Castle. You&rsquo;ll find <a href="https://edla.co.uk/blog-exploring-zakrzowek-a-unique-blend-of-nature-and-design/">a trio of turquoise man-man pools</a> that are perfectly safe for taking a dip.

<h3 dir="ltr">September&ndash;November (fall)</h3>
Personally, this is my favorite time to visit Krak&oacute;w. The temperatures are pleasant (10 &deg;C-18 &deg;C/50 &deg;F-64 &deg;F), the sun glows golden, and the trees are ablaze with crimson leaves. It&rsquo;s also a quieter window to visit before hordes of tourists flock to see the city&rsquo;s spectacular Christmas markets.
Another important event on the Polish Calendar is All Saints&rsquo; Day, falling on November 1st. Locals across the country head to the cemeteries with flickering candles to pay their respects to lost loved ones. Take a solemn stroll through <a href="https://krakow.travel/en/888-krakow-rakowicki-friedhof">Rakowicki Cemetery</a> after the sun sets on the 1st for a beautifully poignant glimpse into Polish Catholic traditions.

<h2 dir="ltr">Travel Style</h2>
Krak&oacute;w is a compact and affordable city. Its Old Town has the largest medieval market square in Europe, so it's hardly surprising that it was named a&nbsp;UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Despite the historical vibes, the city also gained a reputation as a prime bachelor/bachelorette party destination thanks to its affordable drinks and nightlife. Unsurprisingly, Krak&oacute;w's residents have been keen to cut back on the less wholesome antics, resulting in bar curfews and noise regulations being put in place in recent years.&nbsp;
In general, Krak&oacute;w is relatively safe, and many of the historic attractions are suitable for families. Wawel Castle in particular is a must-visit for all ages, as it sets its self apart from other European castles thanks to its <a href="https://wawel.krakow.pl/en/exhibition-constant/dragon-s-den">real fire-breathing dragon</a>, admired by all ages.

Solo (female) travelers should feel safe by themselves in the city. The streets are usually busy and well-lit, and there is a reliable public transport system.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
LGBTQ+ travelers&nbsp;should be aware that Poland in general is a very conservative country. Public opinions towards same-sex couples are mixed, and many politicians openly advocate against LGBTQ+ rights. It's not unusual for members of the LGBTQ+ community to encounter uncomfortable looks or unwelcoming behavior, especially in more rural areas.
That being said, Krak&oacute;w is one of the more progressive cities. The LGBTQ+ scene is small, but growing, with a handful of inclusive bars and caf&eacute;s, like <a href="https://www.instagram.com/lindokrakow?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&amp;igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw==">Lindo</a>. Outside of these safe spaces, however, public displays of affection between same-sex couples may well receive stares or discriminatory comments.
Krak&oacute;w does have a pride event each year, but it often attracts counter-protests from far-right political groups. For more support and advice, you can reach out to&nbsp;<a href="https://znakirownosci.org.pl/signs-of-equality/">Krak&oacute;w&rsquo;s LGBTQ+ community center</a>.

<h2 dir="ltr">How to Get Around Krak&oacute;w</h2>
Getting around Krak&oacute;w is fairly easy. It&rsquo;s mostly flat and very walkable, with the popular tourist sites all pretty close together. It's only a 10-minute walk from the Old Town to Wawel Castle.
<a href="https://goodtimemonty.com/how-to-use-the-krakow-tram/">Trams and buses</a> are a great option if you're less mobile or want to hop across the city quickly. They are clean, reliable, and affordable at 4zł ($1USD) per 20-minute ride. You can purchase a ticket from the machines at each stop, and you&rsquo;ll then need to validate them on board at the start of your journey.&nbsp;
You will also spot taxis dotted across the city, although traffic controls are quite restrictive in busy tourist areas like the main square. Taxi drivers may have to park up and let you out a little further away if your destination is in one of these areas. Otherwise, I&rsquo;ve personally found Uber to be surprisingly affordable, if you do prefer the convenience of a private transfer.

Deep beneath the ground, around 40 minutes southeast of Krak&oacute;w, sits one of the <a href="https://www.wieliczka-saltmine.com/">oldest salt mines in the world</a>. Spanning over 300 km, it&rsquo;s a subterranean maze of chambers, tunnels, lakes, and even a cathedral. A standard tour takes around two and a half hours, but you can opt to stay the night if you want the full experience.

<h3 dir="ltr">Auschwitz-Birkenau</h3>
The former Nazi concentration camp is around a one-and-a-half-hour drive from Krak&oacute;w and offers a deeply moving look into the past atrocities of WW2. Entry is free without a guide, but you will still need to <a href="https://visit.auschwitz.org/?lang=en">reserve a time slot on their website</a> weeks in advance. To fully comprehend the camp, I would strongly recommend booking a guided tour for zł130 ($35USD) on the website.
<h3 dir="ltr">Zakopane</h3>
When city life gets a bit much, the fresh mountain air of Zakopane is only a two-and-a-half-hour drive away. Be it a <a href="https://www.whereintheworldistosh.com/2021/03/18/the-complete-guide-to-hiking-to-morskie-oko-polands-most-beautiful-lake-in-the-tatra-mountains/">summer hike to Morski Oko</a> or a day spent on the <a href="https://www.skiresort.info/ski-resorts/zakopane/">(budget-friendly) slopes</a>, this region is a must-visit at any time of the year.

Look out for local <a href="https://keytopoland.com/post/oscypek-traditional-polish-highland-cheese">oscypek sellers</a> on the side of the mountain roads. It&rsquo;s a salty, smoked cheese made from sheep&rsquo;s milk, and it&rsquo;s absolutely delicious &mdash; especially when served with a dollop of cranberry jam.

<h2 dir="ltr">Food</h2>
Undoubtedly, my favorite part about visiting Poland is the food. It&rsquo;s flavorsome, hearty, and incredibly comforting.
If you're on a budget, look out for&nbsp;<a href="https://palealetravel.beehiiv.com/p/krakus-milk-bar">bar mleczny</a>, otherwise known as milk bars. These canteen-style diners were originally subsidized by the government during communist times to offer affordable, home-style meals to workers. Nowadays, they're still a popular place to stop for a classic, no-frills meal on the cheap &mdash; and I can confirm, they are usually very tasty!

It&rsquo;s also worth checking out the cooking schools on the island, a number will offer vegetarian-specific classes so you can recreate a piece of your holiday once you return home and make for a lasting introduction to the culture of the region.

Due to less prevalence of dairy in their cuisine, you can find many dishes that are vegan by default; of course, it&rsquo;s always best to double check as ghee can sometimes be used instead of oil for frying, and milk powder is added to coconut milk in some instances.

Brush up on your Portuguese so you can check for sneaky additions like pork fat, which is often used to add flavour to bean stews.

Over time animal products have been widely introduced, however, it is still easy to find restaurants with vegan (&ldquo;kin jay&rdquo; in Thai) or vegetarian (&ldquo;mangsawirat&rdquo;) offerings. The country&rsquo;s foodie hotspot, Chiang Mai, has long been home to a tonne of suitable restaurants, and they have new eateries popping up all the time. Fish sauce or shrimp paste are common flavorings so you will still need to be diligent, and expect eating out in the busy street markets to be challenging. A must-do when visiting Thailand is going to a cooking class, and you&rsquo;ll find plenty of schools that cater exclusively to vegetarian and vegan diets, with classes ranging from traditional dishes and desserts through to making tofu from scratch.

<h3>Tips and tricks no matter where you&rsquo;re visiting</h3>
Even if you are touring a country that caters more to vegetarianism and veganism than average, it&rsquo;s not always smooth sailing - particularly when you come up against a language barrier. On the flipside, destinations that aren&rsquo;t known for their plant based cuisine shouldn&rsquo;t be considered impossible to visit. With some preparation you&rsquo;ll be all set to get your munch on, wherever you end up! Here are a few things to consider:
<h4>Use apps to your advantage</h4>
Numerous apps have sprouted up dedicated to the vegetarian and vegan food scenes, and are helpful to speed up the search for the best foodie spots on your travels. <a href="https://www.happycow.net/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Happy Cow</a> is widely regarded as the most comprehensive and covers restaurants, as well as stores, hotels and resorts. There are also vegan specific restaurant apps, such as <a href="https://www.vanilla-bean.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vanilla Bean</a> and <a href="https://www.abillionveg.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Abillionveg</a>. Be sure to check out The Vegan Society&rsquo;s<a href="The Best Vegan and Vegetarian-Friendly Places to Visit Around the World" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Passport</a> for a handy multilingual phrasebook app.
<h4>Overcome the language barrier</h4>
Bring cards printed with your dietary needs translated into the local language(s) of your destination &ndash; not everyone will understand the term &ldquo;vegan&rdquo; so instead try translating a list of specific foods you avoid, e.g. &ldquo;I do not eat meat, seafood, dairy, eggs&rdquo;. These <a href="https://www.maxlearning.net/HEALth/V-Cards.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">V-cards</a> can be saved to your phone, but it&rsquo;s also a good idea to have printed copies as a backup.
<h4>Find a space for DIY meals</h4>
Booking accommodation that has cooking facilities, such as a serviced apartment, Airbnb or even hostels, will allow you the flexibility to cook for yourself and takes the pressure off having to find a suitable place to eat out for every meal. You can also make the most of local markets to create versions of the region&rsquo;s specialities without meat or animal products, if you can&rsquo;t find suitable options at restaurants!
<h4>Bring an emergency food stash</h4>
Take some key supplies with you from home. Pack your favourite dry and tinned ingredients if you are unsure if they will be available at your destination (only if you&rsquo;ll have cooking facilities available, of course!). Bringing snacks such as protein bars will ensure you never get caught out on travel days.
<h4>Keep up those nutrients</h4>
Pack supplements (such as B12 and iron) to keep healthy on the road, even if you don&rsquo;t usually need them at home. This one is particularly important to avoid deficiencies on long journeys when you may struggle to find your usual food sources of essential nutrients.
<h4>Connect with locals</h4>
Join local groups, such as on Facebook (for example, try searching &ldquo;Vegans in [your destination]&rdquo;), to connect with fellow vegans and vegetarians for the most up-to-date advice on where to eat and shop.
