As soon as December arrives, some of the Jack's Navigators kind of lose the plot. In particular, our Member Experience Lead, Jo, gets a little carried away with all the festivities, and this year, she decided to share Christmassy facts from around the world with the team.
In the spirit of the season of giving, I thought I'd gather all our fave nuggets of seasonal wisdom together in one place to share them with you. And where better to start than with the cute little&nbsp;<a href="https://www.inspirationswholesale.co.uk/blog/christmas/what-are-gonks-where-are-they-from/">gonks</a> that have been creeping into Christmas decor in recent years?
The eyeless infiltrators started life in Scandinavia as nisser, small spirits that live in a family&rsquo;s house or barn and secretly act as their guardian. All would go swimmingly if a nisse felt appreciated - they would protect the family and its animals from evil, and they might even do the farmyard chores.
You don&rsquo;t want to offend a nisse, though. One too many tea breaks or forgetting to leave out the obligatory <a href="https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/what-is-risengrod">bowl of porridge on Christmas Eve</a> is enough to get you in the bad books, and that&rsquo;s when the pranks start. Tying cows&rsquo; tails together and turning objects upside down sounds fairly silly and mostly harmless, but word has it they&rsquo;d also break things or even attack people.
These days, nisser are considered friendly Christmas spirits who might still pull a few pranks here and there (much more elf on the shelf). They became the bearers of gifts in Denmark in the 1840s, with Sweden and Norway following suit later in the 19th century. The <a href="https://backyardgoats.iamcountryside.com/ownership/julbock-swedens-legendary-yule-goat/">Yule Goat</a> had previously held the reins on Scandi Christmas, but now they occasionally show up to hand out gifts together.

Iceland does things a little differently, of course, with not one but thirteen J&oacute;lasveinar, aka <a href="https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/meet-the-thirteen-yule-lads-icelands-own-mischievous-santa-clauses-180948162/">Yule Lads</a>, and their rather unorthodox family. The Yule Lads come down from their mountain home one by one on the nights leading up to Christmas to give gifts.
Much like the nisser, their mean and violent tendencies have been softened over the centuries, so now they&rsquo;re just seen as mischief-makers. Their appearance has also changed with time - the story goes that their mother, Gr&yacute;la, is a troll, so they used to resemble weirdly proportioned elves, but have been increasingly depicted as human over time.
Icelandic children traditionally leave a shoe on their windowsill each night from 12th December until Christmas Eve in the hopes of getting a gift from the Yule Lads. Naughty kids needn&rsquo;t bother, however - unless they really want to get a potato (sometimes raw, sometimes rotten). And that&rsquo;ll certainly be your fate if you forget to leave out a <a href="https://whydyoueatthat.wordpress.com/2011/12/01/day-1-laufabraud/">laufabrau&eth;</a> &nbsp;for them, too.

<li>St&uacute;fur (Stubby) on 14th December &ndash; The shortest of the lads, he swipes leftover food from frying pans.</li>
<li>&THORN;v&ouml;rusleikir (Spoon Licker) on 15th December &ndash; He licks spoons, of course.</li>
<li>Pottasleikir (Pot Licker) on 16th December &ndash; This guy will steal unwashed pots from the kitchen so he can lick them clean.</li>
<li>Askasleikir (Bowl Licker) on 17th December &ndash; He snatches bowls out from under beds and gobbles up any morsels of food.</li>
<li>Hur&eth;askellir (Door Slammer) on 18th December &ndash; He slams doors, and he&rsquo;ll do this all night if he finds any open.</li>
<li>Skyrg&aacute;mur (Skyr Gobbler) on 19th December &ndash; He&rsquo;s ravenous for skyr, Icelandic yoghurt, and will pinch any that's up for grabs.</li>
<li>Bj&uacute;gnakr&aelig;kir (Sausage Swiper) on 20th December &ndash; Hide your sausages or this guy will eat them.</li>
<li>Gluggag&aelig;gir (Window Peeper) on 21st December &ndash; He&rsquo;ll peep through windows in the hope he can steal something.</li>
<li>G&aacute;tta&thorn;efur (Door Sniffer) on 22nd December &ndash; You&rsquo;ll find this large-nosed lad sniffing doorways in pursuit of baked goods.</li>
<li>Ketr&oacute;kur (Meat Hook) on 23rd December &ndash; He&rsquo;s hungry for meat, so lock up your lamb chops!</li>
<li>Kertasn&iacute;kir (Candle Beggar) on 24th December &ndash; Finally, the last of the Yule Lads is known for making off with candles.</li>

We&rsquo;re sure we&rsquo;ve already spotted a few of these guys out at work Christmas parties&hellip; looking at you, Spoon Licker!
But that&rsquo;s not all - their evil troll mother is like the Icelandic Child Catcher, said to venture around Iceland looking for naughty children to whisk away in her sack. The only thing all the legends agree on is that she and her husband Leppal&uacute;&eth;i were cannibals, otherwise it&rsquo;s up to us to decide <a href="https://guidetoiceland.is/connect-with-locals/regina/gryla-and-leppaludi-the-parents-of-the-icelandic-yule-lads">how many tails</a> and how many children they each had.
But one thing we know for sure is that together they own the giant <a href="https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/each-christmas-icelands-yule-cat-takes-fashion-policing-extreme-180961420/"> J&oacute;lak&ouml;tturinn</a>, or Christmas Cat. She stalks the darkness on Christmas Eve, preying on anyone who didn&rsquo;t get new clothes as a gift this year&hellip;

The only thing better than Halloween is Christmas! The only thing better than that is an amalgamation of the two (Nightmare Before Christmas). A perfect mixture of weird and dark with sparkly joy. If this sounds like your kinda holiday, well then I have some good news for you: there's a Christmas tradition in&nbsp;Wales that's made to order!
The tradition of Mari Lwyd dates back to the end of the 18th century, but it&rsquo;s believed to have much older Pagan origins.&nbsp;A horse skull is mounted on a stick, decorated with ornaments and ribbons, and adorned with a large cloth to hide the person beneath. You'll find the former horse galloping door to door around Christmas, carried by a group of merry carollers, who also challenge the people inside with rhymes and riddles.
This ritual is known as&nbsp;pwnco, where the Mari Lwyd troupe tries to win entry to a household by outwitting its occupants in a battle of rhymes. You could call it some kind of ancient rap battle. If they succeed, the carollers are welcomed inside and treated to food and refreshments before moving on to the next house.
Mari Lwyd is considered good luck for every household it enters, so it&rsquo;s rarely defeated in a rhyme contest. Win or lose, most are happy to welcome them in!

The festive season in the Czech Republic is all about finding love for the new year and predicting marriage. If you're in the market and bored of Tinder, here are a few tips:
Shoe chucking:
Stand with your back to the door (any door will do) and chuck a shoe over your shoulder. If the toe lands pointed towards the door, then it is meant to signify that you will marry in the new year. If the toe points any other direction, better luck next time!
The elder tree shimmy:
Třesu třesu bez, pověz ty mi pes, kde můj mil&yacute; dnes! (Shake, shake, shake the elder tree, tell me, dog, where my love will be!) 
These are the words that single ladies may want to recite while standing under an Elder tree and giving it a good shake. Once you're done, stand quietly and listen out until you hear a dog barking. Whichever direction the sound comes from is the direction from which your future husband will appear.
Barborky a.k.a. cherry tree twigs:
On St. Barbara's Day, which lands on the 4th of December, cut a twig off a cherry tree and place it in a vessel of water. If the twig blooms before Christmas Eve, there's a good chance we'll be hearing wedding bells in the new year!
Water faces:
Head down to your closest body of water, like a pond, river, lake, or even a big puddle. Bend over the water and think seriously about marriage. After some time, you'll see the face of your future husband in the reflection of the water. We're unclear exactly how long 'some time' is, but that's the thing about superstitions &mdash; they're rarely very precise.

Ti&oacute; de Nadal (a.k.a. Caga Ti&oacute;, a.k.a. Poop Log) is a festive wooden log that appears in houses around Catalonia each Christmas. No Ti&oacute; is complete without little stick legs, a painted cheerful face, and a traditional Catalan&nbsp;barretina hat. Every family has their own unique log, some with a simple charcoal face while others are more intricately decorated.
Ti&oacute; de Nadal becomes part of the Christmas celebrations from the 8th of December (Feast of the Immaculate Conception) and stays till Christmas Eve, placed in his own special corner of the home. The kids in the house are responsible for keeping their festive friend covered with a blanket to stay warm, and for keeping him fed. Tangerines, cookies, nuts are ideal to 'prime' him for the big day. 
Every evening, the children gather around&nbsp;Ti&oacute; and sing him traditional songs while hitting him with a stick. It's all part of the process, honest! The better&nbsp;Ti&oacute; is treated by the children during his stay, the better their rewards come Christmas.
On either the night of the 24th or the morning of the 25th, Caga Ti&oacute; is taken from his corner and completely covered with his blanket, before being placed in the middle of the room. The kids then gently beat him with a stick one final time and lift the blanket to see what Ti&oacute; has "pooped" out for everyone. The little treasures usually range from sweets and small trinkets to toys and large presents.
Equal parts whimsy and delight, the&nbsp;Caga Ti&oacute; isn&rsquo;t just about making a cheery log &ldquo;poop&rdquo; gifts. It is designed to help children learn values like patience and generosity, while also enjoying the magic of Christmas.&nbsp;

We&rsquo;ll round off by heading back to Czechia for more seasonal superstitions. Christmas dinner is eaten on 24th December, and comes with an incredible plethora of food related customs and superstitions that need to be followed. It's quite the list and, if it were me, I would absolutely need to take notes and create a checklist. So, let's get stuck in:

<li dir="ltr">By chucking a piece of V&aacute;nočka (Christmas bread) into a well, your water will be good quality in the new year </li>
<li dir="ltr">To make sure your bees produce enough honey, you should also sprinkle a few V&aacute;nočka crumbs in front of the bee hive </li>
<li dir="ltr">Want your cows to be the best milk producers on the meadow? Feed precious Daisy a piece of bread on Christmas Eve! </li>
<li dir="ltr">Tired of evil lurking around every corner? Place honey on your Christmas table to protect your guests against bad luck and evil in the new year! </li>
<li dir="ltr">And if you don't place garlic&nbsp;under the table, are you even celebrating Christmas? These little cloves are believed to bring strength, and provide protection to everyone around the table. <img src="https://cdn.jacksflightclub.com/id/b64164ab45bafe9f989ed728b20e289b2ab6abd6" width="245" height="367" style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"> </li>
<li dir="ltr">Sweeter milk from your family goat? Give them a sweet treat on Christmas Eve! By sharing your apples with Sally, you'll be blessed with sweeter milk. </li>
<li dir="ltr">Traditionally, a meal called Kuba, made from onions, mushrooms, garlic, and barley, was served at Christmas dinner as part of the main course. Nowadays, it's often replaced by mushroom soup for supper. The mushroom portion of the meal is the important part, though, essential for providing strength and health in the new year! </li>
<li dir="ltr">On the 24th of Dec, dip a sheaf of grain into holy water (ideally not obtained by nefarious means) and sprinkle the water all over your house, both inside and out, to ensure that your home is safe from being burnt down over the next year! </li>
<li dir="ltr">Want enough eggs to feed an army? Heck yes, omelettes and the aforementioned sweetened goat milk cheese sounds delish. Well, in that case, you need to feed a variety of poppy seed, peas, wheat, and barley to your chooks on Christmas Eve to guarantee eggs for everyone!</li>

Getting away is supposed to be relaxing, but for introverts, when your trip turns into a long string of social events and awkward conversations with randos who just don&rsquo;t get that you might be sitting alone on purpose&hellip;you might come home feeling like you need a vacation from your vacation.
Of course, you can make any trip work for your needs as long as you plan well. Just knowing your limits and giving yourself ample time to recharge in a quiet place (or embracing <a href="https://jacksflightclub.com/travel-hub/beginners-guide-to-slow-travel">slow travel</a>) can go a long way.
But to really get away from the extroverted world and not feel pressured to socialize more than you want, here are a few especially introvert-friendly places around the world. From ditching pointless conversations to avoiding human interaction altogether, you can decide just how much alone time is right for you.
Note: You don&rsquo;t have to travel solo to have a great trip as an introvert - I usually prefer to bring a travel buddy who&rsquo;s comfortable being &ldquo;alone together&rdquo; with me. But for really getting away for some quality &ldquo;me time,&rdquo; it&rsquo;s worth giving solo travel a try. Any of these options would be great for a solo traveler, but here&rsquo;s one for beginners.
<h3>Go solo in New Zealand</h3>
For a first-time solo traveler (especially an introverted one), you can&rsquo;t really beat New Zealand. (Yep, you&rsquo;re allowed to go without a band of <a href="https://www.newzealand.com/us/feature/the-lord-of-the-rings-trilogy-filming-locations/">elves, dwarves and hobbits</a>.)

Consistently rated in the top 5 of the <a href="https://www.visionofhumanity.org/maps/#/">Global Peace Index</a>, NZ&rsquo;s about as safe as you can get for venturing out on your own. Heck, you don&rsquo;t even have to worry about dangerous <a href="https://nzpocketguide.com/10-things-you-did-not-know-about-new-zealand-wildlife/">animals</a> attacking you out in the wild (though the redback spider can be deadly, at least to small children, so I guess don&rsquo;t completely let your guard down).
It&rsquo;s also super easy to get around, with just <a href="https://www.nzgeo.com/stories/highway-one/">one main highway</a> and really good infrastructure. So you can rent a vehicle and go on a mega road trip - it&rsquo;ll just be you, the car, and some <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHCemviY06Y">gorgeous scenery</a>.
And this is really a &ldquo;<a href="https://www.lonelyplanet.com/articles/new-zealand-road-trips">choose your own adventure</a>&rdquo; opportunity. While you can definitely find lots of friendly locals on your journey, you can also make it as people-free as you want by staying in sparsely populated places the whole time. But don&rsquo;t worry, you&rsquo;ll still have plenty to do and see.
For example, Akaroa on the South Island has a population in the hundreds, but you&rsquo;ll find lots of great hiking trails and ocean access. You might even catch a glimpse of the <a href="https://www.worldwildlife.org/species/hector-s-dolphin#:~:text=Hector%27s%20dolphins%20are%20the%20smallest,like%20a%20Mickey%20Mouse%20ear.">world&rsquo;s smallest dolphin</a>&hellip;which is just too adorable.
You could also try some white-water rafting in Taihape (pop. about 1,800) or surfing in Raglan (pop. about 3,000).
<h3>Shun small talk in Finland</h3>
Finland is consistently ranked one of the <a href="https://www.cntraveler.com/gallery/the-10-happiest-countries-in-the-world">happiest countries in the world</a>, and I can&rsquo;t help wondering whether the fact that they discourage small talk there has something to do with it&hellip;

Yep, you read that right. There&rsquo;s essentially <a href="https://www.bbc.com/travel/article/20181016-how-the-finnish-survive-without-small-talk">no small talk</a> in Finnish culture. In fact, <a href="https://introvertedgrowth.com/5-introverted-countries-and-cultures-that-value-introversion/">unnecessary chatter</a> is impolite.
It&rsquo;s not because Finns are shy. After all, they&rsquo;re pretty comfortable getting fully nude in <a href="https://finland.fi/life-society/bare-facts-of-the-sauna/#:~:text=Saunas%20have%20existed%20in%20other,were%20born%20in%20the%20sauna.">saunas</a>. They just recognize (like I wish everyone would) that pointless weather chit-chat is unnecessary, and if you&rsquo;re going to have a conversation, it should be about something that matters.
Even for those of us who cringe at small talk, it&rsquo;s hard to imagine not being expected to do it. But in a country where there&rsquo;s no such thing as an <a href="https://medium.com/finland-stories/the-sound-of-finnish-silence-and-why-i-love-it-4130bb20d033">awkward silence</a>, it&rsquo;s a glorious reality.
Hating small talk isn&rsquo;t the only overlap between Finnish culture and introversion. If you enjoy the <a href="https://www.instagram.com/introvertdoodles/?hl=en">Introvert Doodles</a> webcomics, you should probably check out <a href="https://www.instagram.com/finnishnightmaresofficial/">Finnish Nightmares</a>. Featuring &ldquo;nightmarish&rdquo; scenarios like having to <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/BVPynKFlSC7/">self-promote</a> or <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/BElZJBDFbnF/">ask for help</a> while shopping, they&rsquo;re just as relatable.
Plus, in Finland, they really respect your space.

You&rsquo;ve got lots of opportunities to enjoy all that extra space, too, whether you choose to stay in Helsinki with the chance of a whole <a href="https://www.visitfinland.com/en/articles/the-helsinki-islands/">island</a> to yourself, or head out into the deep solitude of Lapland to catch aurora borealis or do some cross-country skiing.
<h3>Get lost in the crowd in Tokyo</h3>
Tokyo, with its population over 14 million, might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think about an introvert-friendly trip, but hear me out.
Even though there&rsquo;s lots of hustle and bustle around, you can find pockets of quiet and solitude.

For one thing, you can eat by yourself without anyone bothering you and or weird looks from the wait staff. In fact, it&rsquo;s <a href="https://www.japan.travel/en/sg/story/japanese-custom-solo-dining-quiet-way-savour-your-meal/#:~:text=In%20Japan%2C%20however%2C%20eating%20alone,out%20more%20often%20than%20not.">totally normal</a>; Sushi and ramen bars make it easy to avoid having to ask for a table for one.
You can take it a step further and dine in total solitary bliss at <a href="https://thepetitewanderess.com/ichiran-ramen-tokyo/">this ramen place</a>, which has individual booths.&nbsp;
Other than a brief interaction with a waiter at the beginning of the meal, you get to savor your bowl of umami deliciousness without having to talk to (or even look at) another living soul.
And while there might be a ton of people riding public transportation with you, they&rsquo;re unlikely to strike up a conversation. *Cue sigh of relief.*&nbsp;

You can also find a few peaceful shrines and <a href="https://trulytokyo.com/yushima-seido/">temples</a> where you can get away from it all. Or you can hide away behind the shelves of Book and Bed, which I featured in my article about <a href="https://jacksflightclub.com/travel-hub/unique-and-quirky-destinations-for-book-lovers">bookish destinations</a>.
Either way, you&rsquo;ll find no shortage of alone time.
<h3>Get cozy in Copenhagen</h3>
If you haven&rsquo;t yet discovered the now-famous Danish concept of hygge, prepare yourself. It&rsquo;ll totally rock your introverted world.
It doesn&rsquo;t translate directly, but it has to do with coziness. But like, extreme coziness.
<a href="https://www.visitdenmark.com/denmark/highlights/hygge/what-hygge">VisitDenmark</a> explains it this way: &ldquo;In essence, hygge means creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people. The warm glow of candlelight is hygge. Cozying up with a loved one for a movie &ndash; that&rsquo;s hygge, too.&rdquo;
Hygge doesn&rsquo;t necessarily require you to be alone, but it does involve swapping out big, wild parties for more intimate group gatherings or spending time just being happy and comfortable. Sounds like the best kind of introvert recharging to me, and it&rsquo;s totally built into the culture.

You&rsquo;ll find no shortage of hygge activities in Copenhagen. Here are some ideas to get you started:

<li>Rent a bike and ride solo around the city.</li>

But in Latvia, it&rsquo;s not just quiet for quiet&rsquo;s sake. The culture really prizes creativity, and they feel like the best way to be creative is to have space and time to yourself.

As an introverted reader, I&rsquo;m definitely a fan of <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/introvert/comments/ericl5/this_banner_outside_the_latvian_embassy_in/">this banner</a> that proudly hung outside the Latvian embassy in D.C. a couple of years ago.
I know not all introverts are necessarily creative, but since a lot of us mostly live in our heads, plenty of us have a project or two in the works.&nbsp;
Whether you&rsquo;re an aspiring writer, artist, baker, etc., taking a creative getaway to this Baltic country is sure to be productive.
For something a bit more directed (if you&rsquo;re okay with some human interaction), you can book with a retreat company like <a href="https://www.wildnesscollective.com/">Wild&rsquo;ness Collective</a> or even try for a <a href="https://www.transartists.org/en/map?field_regio_target_id=All&amp;field_addresses_country_code=LV&amp;field_tax_discipline_target_id=All">residency</a> (and get paid to live out your artistic dreams in Latvia).

Latvia&rsquo;s low population and dense forests mean that solitude is easy to find, and you definitely won&rsquo;t get weird looks for walking around on your own to take inspiration from <a href="https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/jauniela">gorgeous city streets</a>, a <a href="https://historiceuropeancastles.com/latvia/">fairytale castle</a> or an <a href="https://youtu.be/-HNlnoOLWAc?t=10source=lnms&amp;tbm=isch&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjkvpTByIz4AhW_s4QIHZ1xCL8Q_AUoAnoECAEQBA&amp;biw=1536&amp;bih=754&amp;dpr=1.25">otherworldly bog</a>.
To get in some deep relaxation, you can also get a personalized treatment and quiet meditation time at <a href="https://www.liveriga.com/en/3558-taka-spa4z4AhV4mYQIHddGC0oQ_AUoAnoECAIQBA&amp;biw=1536&amp;bih=754&amp;dpr=1.25">Taka Spa</a>, one of the largest spas in the Baltics. If that doesn&rsquo;t get things flowing, I don&rsquo;t know what will.
<h3>Soak in the quiet of the Oregon Coast</h3>
I&rsquo;m the type of person who likes to stand alone at the edge of the ocean and contemplate my place in the universe (or just hunt for pretty shells), so I&rsquo;d rather skip a crowded beach of sunbathers and loud volleyballers.&nbsp;
Enter: the Oregon coast.

With an evergreen forest backdrop and frequent cloud cover, there are tons of blissfully <a href="https://traveloregon.com/things-to-do/trip-ideas/favorite-trips/less-crowded-beaches-on-the-oregon-coast/">uncrowded beaches</a>, prime for quiet meditation or straight-up brooding.
And with tons of <a href="https://traveloregon.com/things-to-do/attractions/oregon-coasts-surprising-places/">weird and wonderful stuff</a> to explore, the solo walk possibilities are endless.
Sure, the water tends to be a bit chilly and you might get a bit of rain, but in my experience that&rsquo;s just a good excuse to end the day with a cozy bread bowl of clam chowder from <a href="https://ilovemoschowder.com/">Mo&rsquo;s</a>. Don&rsquo;t worry, you can get some chowder to go if the restaurant is too crowded for your taste. (Get a family-sized serving. Trust me on this.)
<h3>Trade people for wildlife in the Gal&aacute;pagos Islands</h3>
Maybe the dancing, parades, and jam-packed streets of Carnival in Brazil aren&rsquo;t for you, but South America has lots to offer those who prefer alone time in nature.
An especially good spot for introverts is the Gal&aacute;pagos.

For one thing, it&rsquo;s a bit tricky (and a little pricey) to get there, so tourism is relatively limited (which is a good thing for conservation). The region only gets about 250,000 tourists per year (versus around 700,000 in Quito and 2 million in Ecuador as a whole).&nbsp;
So, needless to say, you&rsquo;re unlikely to run into crowds.
Visiting the Gal&aacute;pagos is all about quietly observing nature and wildlife. From moving slow next to a giant tortoise at <a href="https://localadventurer.com/giant-galapagos-tortoise-habitat/">Rancho Primcias</a> to <a href="https://www.galakiwi.com/blog/5-great-galapagos-snorkeling-spots/#:~:text=When%20it%20comes%20to%20sea,water%20and%20from%20the%20beach.">snorkeling with sea lions</a>, you can make sure most of your encounters don&rsquo;t involve other humans.

Maybe you&rsquo;ll find that the Gal&aacute;pagos or one of the other places I&rsquo;ve listed here are an introvert&rsquo;s natural habitat. But there are lots of places out there to spend some quality time with yourself, and it never hurts to check whether a place is good for solo travel (especially if you're a <a href="https://www.solofemaletravelers.club/solo-female-travel-safety-index/">solo female traveler</a>).&nbsp;
If you&rsquo;re not planning to go it alone, make a plan with your travel companions to ensure you get the time you need to yourself and don&rsquo;t come back as a peopled-out zombie.&nbsp;
And even when you get a weird look or two for eating alone or putting on your huge headphones on the bus, remember that there&rsquo;s nothing wrong with knowing and caring for your lil&rsquo; introverted self.

Pockets of solitude: 7 perfect places for introverted travelers

Faroe Islands

The island of Tindh&oacute;lmur sits on the southside of S&oslash;rv&aacute;gsfj&oslash;r&eth;ur, on the West coast of V&aacute;gar in the Faroe Islands. It has five peaks: Ytsti, Arni, L&iacute;tli, Brei&eth;i, Bogni (or Farthest, Eagle, Small, Broad, Bent), and from the moment they first appeared on my Instagram horizon, I knew I&rsquo;d visit the Faroe Islands. I knew very little about this remote archipelago, but I was instantly captivated by the language, landscapes, folklore, and culture of the islands. I didn&rsquo;t know how to pronounce anything, but it still sang to me. Anyway, the good thing is I got some tickets and went about ten months later! Here&rsquo;s just some of what I did in five days on the islands. Day one The Faroes are only 360km from the Shetlands, but distances don&rsquo;t mean much when you&rsquo;re surrounded by the North Atlantic: the weather always calls the shots. In the summer there are two direct flights from Edinburgh to the Faroes, but as I went in late September, we flew from Gatwick via Stockholm (Easyjet), then onto V&aacute;gar, the island&rsquo;s only airport. Tickets were just under &pound;260 return with a very tight transfer in Stockholm. 
A faff for a European flight, sure, but still only 6 hours door to door. Even landing in the Faroes is a thrill, you fly between valleys and over lakes into a small but well-equipped airport. We then jumped in a cab to our airBnB in the capital, T&oacute;rshavn. Our driver took us on the scenic route (after asking first) and we went past what&rsquo;s honestly the prettiest prison I&rsquo;ve ever seen - grass roof, stunning view down a fjord, it even had a small crazy golf course, and only two residents at the time!&nbsp; <img src="https://d20k4h1q6oowm6.cloudfront.net/id/527d63aed212ce71bf762dfc65ec4ec1134cfb02"> Day two The Faroe Islands have a hilariously small population of about 50,000 people, the majority of which live in the capital, T&oacute;rshavn. There are limited hotels in the capital (with more on the way), and some are expensive, but there&rsquo;s plenty of AirBnBs and we chose a simple apartment close to the harbour. We were picked up early on day two for a guided photography tour. 
There are 18 islands on the archipelago, but we focused on V&aacute;gar as it has some of the big hitters in terms of things to see: M&uacute;lafossur waterfall in the village of G&aacute;sadalur, S&oslash;rv&aacute;gsvatn lake and of course Tindh&oacute;lmur, which is easily viewed from the village of B&oslash;ur. I&rsquo;m not the most skilled photographer, but it&rsquo;s basically impossible to take a crap picture of these views. At just under &pound;150, the tour wasn&rsquo;t cheap, but it was fascinating, fun and includes a monster sandwich and a couple of beers on the best picnic bench in the world.&nbsp; <img src="https://d20k4h1q6oowm6.cloudfront.net/id/022f98a405f388a7a2ad4eecc08dcbccbda74d49"> Day three And on the third day we chilled. T&oacute;rshavn is a joy to spend time in. We started with coffee and open sandwiches at Bitin, before strolling to the old town to lust after the tiny, grass-topped 14th-century houses. Next up was a Tiganes, the Faroes' parliament (the islands are a self-governing Danish principality), which is housed in a stunning collection of blood-red timber buildings. 
Lunch was sushi at eticka, which gets fresh fish from the harbour every morning. Then we strolled through Vi&eth;arlundin park to the Listasavn F&oslash;roya (National Gallery of the Faroe Islands) for a mixture of classic and contemporary art from the islands. In the evening, it was the greatest fish soup I&rsquo;ve ever had at Barbara Fishhouse. Eating and drinking in the Faroes isn't very cheap unless you self-cater, but neither is it as eye-watering as some other Nordic countries.&nbsp; <img src="https://d20k4h1q6oowm6.cloudfront.net/id/c95a6726a4ed3d1e4699b7ffb785d265b483e699"> Day four Putting on a dad hat for a moment, the quality of roads in the Faroe Islands is amazing. Seriously. Combine that with the fact there&rsquo;s basically no one on the roads and we felt confident in hiring a car. I even asked if we needed a 4X4 and the nice man just laughed. So on day three we piled into our tiny hair-dryer and went exploring. It is honestly so easy to get around. 
The islands are connected by a series of epic sea tunnels and bridges, and we spent a happy day exploring the villages of Gjogv, Saksun and Tj&oslash;rnuv&iacute;k. In the latter we were invited in for waffles and coffee, and even paddled in the sea. Faroese weather is extremely changeable, so come prepared with decent layers and a good waterproof. We got everything from blazing sun, to freezing wind and dense fog, all in the same day sometimes. <img src="https://d20k4h1q6oowm6.cloudfront.net/id/42861c0af3aa13d7ca2a7bae8c7217a11a0c984f"> 
Day five Everything works extremely well in the Faroe Islands. On our last day, we&rsquo;d booked a boat trip to the legendary Vestmanna bird cliffs. Having returned the hire car, we needed to get to the port in Vestmanna about 40km away. Luckily, in the Faroe Islands, there are just free buses(!) that will take you all over the islands. Amazing. 
The journey to Vestmanna is stunning, then you pile on a boat with lots of other tourists and take a two-hour cruise into another world. It&rsquo;s hard to describe the scale of the cliffs here, but seeing the clouds roll off the edge like ghostly waterfalls is something I&rsquo;ll treasure for the rest of my life. The Faroe Isles are still pretty quiet, tourist wise. It has a busy summer, and the winter is a bit intense to visit. But it&rsquo;s ideal for Autumn and Spring. I think it might just be my favourite place in the world.&nbsp;
