A 20-minute ride turned into a 2-hour adventure... and ended with food poisoning!

Before entering China from Laos on a train I bought an online e-SIM. It turned out my phone wasn't compatible with e-SIMs, so I entered China with no internet. I was hoping to buy a Chinese sim card at the train station, but there were no SIM card shops anywhere. Luckily I had a photo of my hotel, which was a recognizable landmark, but the taxi driver didn't speak a word of English, so when we arrived at the hotel, I couldn't pay as I didn't have internet, Alipay nor cash. I asked him about an ATM but he didn't understand me. I went out of the car and asked at least 50 passers by to help and one guy understood the word ATM. So after a while we found one ATM and I was able to pay the taxi driver. A 20-minute ride turned into a 2-hour adventure. I arrived at the hotel and told my story to the hotel manager, who offered me a complimentary fried rice. I was so happy for the gesture. An hour later I started throwing up. It turned out I got food poisoning! What an introduction!!
