Sometimes the best travel memories are spontaneous

My husband and I had been wanting to visit Bhutan for years, and a Qatar Airways business class deal finally made it possible: Paris to Bangkok with a stopover in Doha. Bhutan’s sole international airport is only reachable from a handful of other cities, one of which is Bangkok, so the deal was perfect.
Unfortunately, our trip was scheduled for March 2026, and the escalating conflict in the Middle East caused our flights to be canceled and left us scrambling for options days before our departure. We quickly pieced together a new itinerary on Air India, flying through Delhi instead of Doha. Since we suddenly found ourselves in northern India, we decided to make the most of it with an overnight trip to Agra and a sunrise visit to the Taj Mahal.
Walking through the towering entrance gate that morning, the Taj Mahal felt unreal. Framed perfectly in the archway, it seemed to drift farther away as you walked toward it. The optical illusion slowly disappeared as the gardens opened before us. My husband took this photograph just after sunrise, before the white marble began to glow but before the crowds arrived. For a few minutes, one of the world's most famous landmarks felt remarkably peaceful.
This isn’t our “best” photo from the trip, but it’s one of the most meaningful. It reminds us to be flexible, to jump at opportunities when they arise, and to enjoy the moment. Sometimes the best travel memories are spontaneous. A stopover forced by circumstances outside of our control became one of the highlights of our entire vacation.
