Over 12 years ago now I went on a once-in-a-lifetime trip across central America as a teenager, trekking up volcanoes, bungee jumping and exploring cloud forests without a care in the world. My risk-taking finally caught up with me when, after taking a dip in the sea at night following a few too many cocktails, I was stung by a jellyfish on the island of Roatán and collapsed on the beach. After much discussion over whether someone should urinate on me to remove the sting (I refused), a terrifying night in hospital followed, but fortunately treatment meant I could leave the next morning with just a cool purple scar down my arm and a crazy anecdote.
