Bulgaria's Black Sea

"Hell is other people," wrote Jean-Paul Sartre in his 1944 existentialist tragedy No Exit. The common interpretation says he was referring to the torture of being seen, how our very identities are defined by the judgments of others. But we think he could have been talking about the beach.
Seriously, think about it. There's nothing better than relaxing on an isolated shore without any screaming children or speaker-toting college students to bother you. And, while the Black Sea is becoming a lot more popular, it still has plenty of those.
In fact, Bulgaria is full of quietly beautiful hidden places. If the beach isn't your scene, try a 900-year-old monastery carved into a rocky cliff. Or perhaps the seaside fortress of Cape Kaliakra.
"If you're lonely when you're alone," Sartre once wrote, "you're in bad company." We're pretty sure he was talking about vacations like this :-)
