Oh, what's that? You've never heard of Estevão Silva da Conceição?
The "Gaudí of Brazil" might not have the PR of his Catalan counterpart, but we happen to think his work is every bit as compelling. A gardener by trade, Estevão began renovating and redesigning his family's home in the mid-80s, gradually transforming it into a pretty remarkable piece of outsider art. The house, called Casa de Pedra ("House of Stone"), earned comparisons to Antoni Gaudí's work with its curved, organic-inspired lines and mosaic surfaces - although Estevão hadn't even heard of the Spanish architect's work until recently, making this place a bona fide São Paulo original.
Estevão's house is located in the artsy favela of Paraisopolis, best explored with the help of a local guide.
