Discussion: Short and Stressful or Long and Boring - what kind of layover do you prefer?

You've had your eyes on a flight for months, but the prices never drop - and then suddenly, a bargain comes along. But, of course, the layover options are far from ideal.

What would you choose: a short, stressful run through the terminal between gates OR a lengthy wait twiddling your thumbs and eating overpriced airport food?

How long is the right length of time for a layover, and how do you survive the less than ideal?
