In a place with ancient Mayan ruins and warm Caribbean beaches, who would have guessed the coolest attractions would be some big holes in the ground?
Once you see your first cenote, you'll understand. These gorgeous caverns are a Yucatán special, formed when porous limestone bedrock collapses and reveals the pure groundwater underneath.
Our recommendation: Stay away from the ultra-popular spots like Cenote Suytun or Cenote Dos Ojos. Nothing kills those mystical cavern vibes like a huge crowd of wannabe influencers, so stick to more secluded options like Cenote Tak Be Luum.
And if an underground cave feels a little too spooky for your tastes, open-air options like Cenote Jaguar make for perfect non-creepy swimming holes.
The best part? Cenotes maintain a cool 72°-75°F water temperature year-round, so they're just as nice in January as they are in July.
