San Sebastian Church, Manila's finest Gothic Revival basilica, hasn't had the easiest go of it.
Originally constructed in 1621, the first version of the church only lasted about 30 years before it burned down. The second version (which saw an upgrade to fire-resistant bricks) had a better run, and lasted about 200 years... before it lost a fight to an earthquake in 1859.Â
And another earthquake in 1863. And another earthquake in 1880.
After three rounds of earthquake damage, it was time for Version 3.0: a church made of solid steel and designed to be completely quake-proof. The only steel church in all of Asia, it's lasted for over 130 years without collapsing.Â
Unfortunately, the thing about steel is that it tends to corrode in salty coastal air... kinda like the air you find in Manila. So if you're a fan of historic architecture, you miiiiight want to see this one soon :-)
