Planning Easter in Budapest? You may want to pack an extra change of clothes!

In Hungary, Easter Monday comes with its own tradition - Locsolkodás, "the sprinkling." In the olden days, this meant young women being taken at dawn to a stream or well for a complete soaking, which was said to bring blessings for her year ahead.

These days, Locsolkodás is (usually) slightly less soggy. Men and boys recite a short poem before sprinkling women with perfume, getting painted eggs or other treats in return for the blessing.

So if someone comes at you with a bottle of perfume this Easter Monday, don't panic - you might just be getting a little Hungarian good luck (and smelling nice while you're at it!)
