It's been a minute since our last Nicaragua deal, but this one is coming just in the nick of time! Any later and you might have missed out on the Festival of El Torovenado.

Celebrated in the town of Masaya on the last Sunday of October, Torovenado is a satirical carnival, almost like a living political cartoon. Dancers dress in homemade costumes to take shots at social targets ranging from Spanish colonialism to unpopular local politicians.

At the center of it all is El Torovenado himself, a half-bull, half-deer creature that represents Nicaragua's history. According to the story, the bull stands for the power and brute strength of the Spanish, while the deer embodies the intelligence and shrewdness of indigenous people.

It's a perfect Sunday stop if you like a little political satire with your jungle adventures :-)
