Sure, you can call it 'touristy', but the expert local drivers (carreiros) have been thrilling brave visitors with their basket steering skills for over 170 years. So we see it more like an exhilarating glimpse of Madeiran heritage, plus it looks like an absolute blast.

To embark on this speedy ride, you'll need to first take the Funchal Cable Car from the Old Town up to Monte. After that, walk 5 minutes uphill towards the church, where you'll find a ticket booth. It's €27.50 for one person and €35 for two people, and make sure to bring cash.

Then all that's left to do is board your basket and hold on for dear life :-)
