Before you balk at the thought of Glasgow instead of Edinburgh, hear me out.

The only thing between you and the Royal Mile is a 45-min train ride to Waverley Station. Plus, choosing Glasgow as a base means cheaper accommodation (by 30%) and a much livelier (and authentic) nightlife and food scene. 

Most importantly, you've got easier access to Scotland's wild and rugged landscapes. We're talking about the Trossachs, Glencoe, Fort William, Loch Lomond, and the seafood capital, Oban. Not to mention you've basically got the isles of Mull, Islay and Skye at your fingertips. 

And with the city's official motto being "People Make Glasgow" we wouldn't be surprised if your road trip starts with a new friend—or three ;-)
