Penang, Malaysia & Medan, Indonesia
in £460s-£550s/€580s rtn
Mountains are cool and everything, but you could be climbing a volcano instead!
A 2-hour drive from Medan takes you to Berastagi, home to two of these natural marvels.
You won't be able to climb Mount Sinabung due to recent eruptions in the last decade, but it still makes for some incredible photo opportunities. Mount Sibayak, on the other hand, hasn't erupted since 1881, so even though it's technically considered active, the trek is much safer and you're rewarded with these amazing sunrise views.
BTW, don't forget your towel for the muscle-relaxing soak in a hot spring afterwards :-)
