These suspiciously cheap flights didn't just fall on your lap by chance. Nope, you got the first footer's discount didn't ya! Let me guess: tall, dark, clutching a bottle of whiskey?

Now Ireland's repaying the favour by rolling out the green carpet treatment: peak summer skies, trad sessions that mysteriously strike up whenever you walk into a pub and an airport landing that couldn't get any closer to the Cliffs of Moher. 

Allow me to rewind a little... 

In the byegone days on New Year's eve, as the clock neared midnight, Irish families would hold their breath, not for the first note of Auld Lang Syne, but for the first footer.

A dark-haired lad, arms loaded with the holy trinity: a bottle of whiskey, a loaf of bread, and a shiny coin. And if your own fella had brunette locks, you'd shove him out the back door at midnight just so he could come back in. And if you happen to be the only dark-haired in the parish? Well, now, you'd be working every doorstep from here to Killarney.
