Before you go traipsing off across the Highlands, stop at this 150-year-old bar for a drink with destiny.
The Stone of Destiny, that is. For centuries, this humble piece of rock was used in the coronation ceremonies of Scottish kings and queens—until 1296, when it was whisked away to Westminster by the English king Edward I, only to be returned to Scotland in 1996. Today, the stone is on display in Edinburgh Castle.
...or is it?
In 1950, four students from the University of Glasgow snuck into Westminster Abbey, stole the stone, and brought it back across the border to the Arlington Bar. There, they supposedly made a copy of the ancient relic. After a massive manhunt, one of the Stones of Destiny was found and returned to London in 1951, while the other remains on display at the Arlington.
So is the actual stone really in Edinburgh Castle, or is it still here in this corner pub?
Guess you'll have to visit both, just to be sure :-)
