Now, I've asked local Navigator Ian's thoughts about Zhangjiajie's hype and, although he did recommend visiting, he also suggested some less-touristy National Parks…

• Yangshuo County — the Ha Long Bay of China, filled with lush waterfalls, tiny boats floating on the Li River, and plenty of beer fish. You can easily get there by flying to Guilin Liangjiang Airport, or hopping on a bullet train.
• Huangshan — China's Yellow Mountains, to hike around the mind-blowing granite formations, and admire gorgeous rural villages surrounded by a sea of cloud. And as you'd expect, there are plenty of bullet trains to get there.
