Here's a little pro tip: If you decide to hop over to the South Island (as you should; that's where all the best nature is), try to spend at least one night inside Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park. The whole park is a dark sky reserve, so the stargazing is spectacular, plus you'll wake up to some pretty gorgeous views. Who needs coffee? :-)
