Hawaii might be home to plenty of colorful birds, but the eternal favorite is an unassuming brown goose.

The (adorably striped) nēnē is the rarest goose in the world, only found on a few Hawaiian islands! Locals loved them enough to make them the state bird in 1957, and their icon status has really only grown since then. They've responded well to conservation efforts and now birders flock to the islands to see them.

If you want to play your own game of "Spot the Nēnē," there's no better place than Haleakalā National Park. That's right — these geese feel right at home on an active volcano.

So while you're high above the clouds, admiring the otherworldly landscape and learning the ancient legends, keep a lookout for this local celebrity :-)
