Fiji is like the platonic ideal of an island paradise. If you threw every tropical seaside resort into a blender and pressed "puree," you'd wind up with Fiji.

But that doesn't mean it's all private beaches and shows for tourists. Step outside the resort walls and you'll find Fiji's true natural beauty among unpaved roads and rainforest waterfalls. Or check out the capital's municipal markets for fresh fruit, handmade clothes, and other tastes of Fijian culture.

But if you really want to get off the beaten path, hop over to the island of Vanua Levu and visit some rural villages. Bring a respectful attitude and some gifts (it's a local custom), and you'll get a friendly welcome to Fiji's more authentic side :-)
