Chiclayo is a criminally underrated corner of Peru. But that just means you can visit spots like the Mercado Modelo without running into any other tourists! And isn't that every traveler's dream?

You can find all kinds of things here, from fake designer clothing to handmade cooking utensils, but the best part is the mercado de brujas ("witches market" in English) tucked away in the corner.

Once you've had a taste of the city, venture out to the Valley of Pyramids for a crash course in Peruvian history. Be warned, though—some locals say it's haunted.

And if you want to go all in on mystical experiences, take a road trip up to Huacabamba, home to the greatest shamans in Northern Peru. Their hallucinogenic healing ceremonies aren't for the faint of heart, but they can be a life changing experience :-)
