Rent a van, stock up on cheetos, and hit Highway 1 — it's road trip time!

The drive towards LA from San Francisco is around 615 km, and takes around 6 hours if you don't stop. But, you’re going to want to!

Aside from non-negotiables like Malibu, here are my favourites:

• Monterrey — nature lovers should check out Monarch Grove Sanctuary, go whale watching, or just spend the night in a bunk house.
• Big Sur — boasting several state parks and coastal walks, this area of Cali is known for its enchanting hikes and dramatic cliffs. Note: endless staring at the waves crash against the cliffs may take longer than planned.
• Elephant Seal Vista Point — waving at elephant seals is mandatory when driving down to Los Angeles!

Obviously, you can turn this trip into a multicity if you don't feel like driving all the way back up :-)
