Accra, Ghana
in €530s-€560s rtn
It's always a nice treat when Ghana shows up cheap!
But, since it doesn't land in your inbox all too often, let's go back to basics with a few key tips to get your trip planning started.
Before you go:
- Apply for your visa at least 4 weeks in advance. You may be able to start the process online, but you will likely still need to go in person to the Ghanaian Embassy in your region.
- Book a doctor's appointment to get your yellow fever vaccination and malaria tablets.
Getting around:
- Uber and Bolt both work in Accra and a few other big cities, but drivers often prefer cash payments. If you plan on making a few journeys in one day, consider hiring a private driver, which can usually be organised through your hotel.
Good to Know:
- Although English is the official language, Ghanaians speak many local languages. Here are a few Twi phrases you may want to learn: Ete sen-Hello, Medasse-thank you, Akyirii-goodbye.
- As mentioned before, cash is king. You can exchange money before you go, but you'll also find plenty of ATMs in Accra if you prefer to withdraw once you're there. Try to keep the notes as small as possible, as these will be the most useful.
- Things get a lot busier by the time Detty December rolls around. If you don't mind skipping the parties, visit in the autumn for cheaper accommodation and fewer crowds.
