Bulgaria in $390s-$400s RT

Looking for a blast from the past? You're in the right place; Sofia is one of those cities that wears its history on its sleeve.

Take the Rotunda of St. George, for instance. Built in the 4th century as a Roman bathhouse, it was later converted to a baptistry. Then to a church. Then a mosque. Aaaaaand back to a church.

All that history is represented in the gorgeous painted frescoes inside—all five layers of them! You've got ancient Roman floral patterns, a few layers of medieval Bulgarian art, and finally some Islamic motifs left by the Ottomans.

When you think about it, that's kinda like visiting five historical sites at once! So you'll have more time to check out the weird stuff :-)
