Amsterdam in $590s-$610s RT

After landing in Amsterdam, you'll obviously want to have a taste of those stroopwafels. But save some room for another Dutch specialty, served with a side of clandestine history.

At first glance, Café Papeneiland looks like your typical 350-year-old brown café, one of a million in the city. But it's famous for two things: its delicious Dutch-style apple pie (Bill Clinton was a fan, supposedly), and the hidden tunnel that once connected it to an underground Catholic church. Ask the bartender to show you to the secret doorway.

Catholicism was illegal in 17th-century Amsterdam, so worshipers had to meet in illicit churches concealed throughout the city. Although the one beneath the café no longer exists, plenty of them still do.
