ICYMI, this tiny town at the base of the mountains is home to some of the most talented sand and flower artists in the world. They're responsible for bringing to life colourful carpets that stretch hundreds of metres, and are something I've wanted to see in person for many years. Try to time your trip for one of the Sundays during Lent to see a very dramatic procession up to the church.

It takes just over an hour to drive to Antigua from Guatemala City, and the shuttle transfer will cost you less than €20.
