Bing Crosby had it right—we love a Hawaiian Christmas.
And by "Hawaiian Christmas," we obviously mean Makahiki, the winter bash that traditionally heralded in the new year in the islands. In ye olden times, the people of each island would make an image of the god Lono to carry from village to village, celebrations following every step of the way.
Today's Makahiki festivities don't last quite as long, but they still involve plenty of sports, dancing, and terrific local food.
Oh, and here's the best part: All work was forbidden while Lono's image was around, leaving everyone free to relax and party. If only we had the same rule at the ol' JFC office :-)
