Enter Sarchí! This artsy town a bus ride north from San Jose is known for painted woodwork. Intricately decorated oxcarts are dotted around the neighborhood, and you can see the most impressive of them all (the world-record holder, in fact) outside the Oxcart Factory.
This whole shop is worth seeing, as its the last of its kind and you can watch the artists at work hand-painting. But they also make more luggage-friendly pieces than those big carts! This is where we've come for souvenirs — here you can pick up handmade wooden bowls, coasters, carvings... and of course, tiny oxcarts :-)
