El Salvador
in $320s-$330s RT from the West Coast
Ready to kick it Mayan-style? There's a village in El Salvador where you can still party like it's 599.
It's called Joya de Cerén, and it was once a cozy little Mayan farming village. There were about 200 people living there until a massive volcanic eruption chased them away around the year 600 CE, leaving a blanket of deadly ash on their abandoned homes.
That was bad news for the Mayans, but good news for us—the layer of ash preserved Joya de Cerén in a natural time capsule. Visitors can see where they lived (clay houses) and what they ate (guava, agave, and lots of corn), although there is one thing missing: bodies. The fate of the actual villagers remains a mystery.
Best of all, Joya de Cerén is a 45-minute cab ride from San Salvador, so you can be back in time for evening pupusas :-)
