Now your flights to Colombo are sorted, let's talk trains!
Undoubtedly, one of the best things you can do in Sri Lanka is to hop on a train and admire the luscious green scenery from an open carriage window. So here are 3 tips to help make your journey go smoothly...
1) Book tickets in advance — Some of the most popular routes (like the famous blue train from Kandy to Ella) get quickly booked up by tour operators, who sell them on for a much higher price. Aim to book your tickets at least a month in advance if you wanna bag the original low fare yourself.
2) Forget first class — In this situation, the premium ticket really isn't worth the extra money. Since all windows are kept shut in the first class carriage, you miss out on that immersive feeling of the breeze swooshing through the doors and windows as you chug past leafy palms and tea fields.
3) Be flexible with your time — There's no denying it, trains are sloooow, but that's kinda what makes them so special. Don't make fixed plans, embrace the delays and enjoy the ride.
