Animal lovers, these are the best months for spotting the resident sperm whales, thanks to the calmer seas and fewer boats.

Surfers, this is the season for strong Atlantic swell. The waves are powerful and consistent, plus you'll likely only need a 2/3 mm wetsuit!

Hikers, this is the time when Madeira's famous levada trails are at their lushest. Think emerald forests, misty mountain paths and rumbling waterfalls.

Oh, and if you time your visit towards the end of March, you'll just about catch the wildflowers in bloom :-)
