Once the crowds dissipate, the temps cool off, and the surge prices drop back down, you're left with two gorgeous cities that are surprisingly affordable and suddenly much easier to meander. Snag one of those chic, seaside rentals for way less than expected, then spend your days popping in and out of cafés, sans the usual wait times. 

Nice is going to be your top pick if you want those classic Riviera views, but the bigger, less touristy city of Marseille is worth a look, especially in winter — that magnificent Palais Longchamp doesn't really have off-days :-)
