Let's introduce you to the Lake District...

Just around an hour and a half away from Manchester, this National Park is the perfect place to spend a long summer's day.

The area is filled with idyllic lakesides, wide open spaces that are perfect for hiking, and plenty of quaint towns that are so quintessentially English — this guide has loads of info on how to get around them all.

If you want my recommendation, I'd head straight for Ambleside where you'll find the iconic 17th-century bridge house, and even a little hidden waterfall. Trust me, it won't take long to see why this place inspired so many writers and poets!
