The Dominican Republic
in ā¬520s-ā¬590s rtn
Sure, you've heard about the sandy, white beaches, but did you know the Dominican Republic boasts both the highest peak and the lowest point in the Caribbean?
Standing at 3,098 meters, Pico Duarte rises above the island. Tucked into the Dominican Alps, here pine forests replace palm trees and cool mountain air takes over the tropical heat.Ā Getting to the top isnāt just a walk in the park, though. Youāll trek anywhere from 2 to 3 days, depending on your route, so make sure to prepare your calves for it!
On the other hand, you'll find Lake Enriquillo ā also the regionās sole body of water ā 43 meters below sea level. Hop on a boat ride, and you'll quickly spot crocodiles, flamingos, and even rhinoceros⦠iguanas :-)
FYI, the Dominican Republic goes through hurricane season from June till November, so if you book a late-summer/early-fall trip make sure to keep a look at the weather forecast and book travel insurance.
