Koalas and wombats and roos, oh my!

Australia is just crawling with the weirdest critters on Earth, making it a great place for safari adventures. Besides your typical dingoes and wallabies, here are a few to look out for:

• In the deserts of western Oz live the coolest lizards around: thorny devils. These little guys are covered in spikes, have false heads to confuse predators, and can drink water through their feet. What's not to love?
• If you hear any sounds at all in the continent's southeastern forests, there's a decent chance you were near a superb lyrebird. They can imitate almost anything they hear, from kookaburras to camera shutters.
• Finally, we've got sugar gliders, the world's cutest little aviators. Special membranes between their legs let them fly for up to 100 meters, and you don't even have to leave Sydney to see them—just catch an overnight tour of Royal National Park.

Make sure to keep an eye out for drop bears, though :-)
