Naples, Italy in $400s-$540s RT

Naples is a city of highs and lows...

...and I mean that literally.

About 130 feet below the sidewalk, deep in the Naples catacombs, you'll find the remains of several saints and bishops. They're laid to rest in a labyrinthine network of tunnels and chambers carved from stone and decorated with frescoes over a thousand years old. Feeling low never felt so peaceful.

As for the highs, there's a preeettty famous volcano right outside of town, and you can climb all the way to the top! It looks a little different now than it did in 79 AD (exploding will do that to you) but it's surreal to stare directly into that crater and realize you're standing at the site of one of them most famous disasters in ancient history.

And if both of those stops are a little... gloomy for you, we hear there's some lovely scenery right at sea level :-)
