I just flew Avianca last week down to Colombia so I'll give you the rundown on everything you need to know.

But, (especially if you're travelling with more than two people) we recommend upgrading to "Classic", which includes a carry-on, checked bag, and seat selection, on one ticket, and keeping the second ticket "Basic". And then just pay somewhere between 5-10 bucks to pick a seat next to your travel buddy. Easy peasy!

That way, you guys can share luggage, save money and still sit next to each other. 

Second, bring snacks from home, but if you don't, skip the airport shops. Avianca charges for everything on board, but the prices are way cheaper on the plane than at any airport.

And lastly, don't be afraid to ask for help. Our immigration line in Bogota took about an hour (which was no biggie since we didn't have a connection) but plenty of others managed to go through the much shorter Colombian citizens line just by asking. 

And after you make the most of all those tips, the real fun begins :-)
