Barcelona is mostly known for the modern and the medieval, but its roots go back much further.

If you know where to look, Barcelona's ancient history is waiting just below the surface. And I mean that literally—there's a whole neighborhood's worth of Roman ruins under the City History Museum. These millennia-old bathhouses, laundromats, shops and factories are well worth a visit, especially if you're already planning on touring the Gothic Quarter.

And if your tastes run a little sweeter, well, there's always the chocolate museum :-)
