Bangkok at $751 RT

There are hundreds of temples in Bangkok, but today we're focusing on a relatively obscure one: Wat Mahabut, a humble shrine dedicated to a haunting love story.

The stars of our tale are Mae Nak and her husband Mak, a newly married couple expecting their first child. Mak was called away to war while Mae Nak was pregnant, and when he returned, he found his wife and healthy baby waiting at home to greet him.

Or so he thought, anyway.

After a series of mysterious deaths, Mak discovered the truth: Mae Nak and the baby died in childbirth while he was away, and her ghost had been arranging grisly accidents for any neighbor who tried to warn him. Horrified, Mak fled their home, and Mae Nak's grief-stricken spirit rampaged through the village before finally being put to rest.

Today, young men due to be drafted into Thailand's military come to Mae Nak's shrine. Having been separated from Mak by the war, she has been known to answer their prayers, helping them to avoid her husband's tragic fate.

It's worth making a stop for some good fortune :-)
