While Tenerife's volcanic beaches and mountain hikes hold a non-negotiable spot on most to-do lists, here's a lesser known suggestion...the ghost town of Abades.

Set along the dusty, rugged south-east coast, near the village of Los Abriguitos, this shell of a town is seriously eerie! Originally built in the 1940s to house and treat locals suffering from leprosy, the town was abruptly abandoned after the outbreak was quickly controlled.

Now, almost 80 years later, you can still walk among the silent sun-bleached structures of never-completed homes, offices, a school, and even a church....if you're brave enough, that is :-)
