Venice & Verona

Dai, it's spritz time!
You're surely aware of the ubiquitous drink posted on everyone's Instagram story when they're off to any Italian city… but did you know spritz was born in Veneto, the region of Venice and Verona?
It can be traced back to the Austrian domination of the region in the 17th century, thanks to foreign soldiers softening local white wines with a splash of sparkling water (from the German verb, spritzen) — a Venetian nightmare, as you can imagine!
Now, although you can sometimes still be served the original, lighter version of the spritz, you'll find the updated version (created in Padua, in the 1920s) splashed with bitter virtually everywhere.
Try to ditch Aperol for a superior version with Select at least once, or organize a Prosecco tasting session to honour the true king of the aperitivo :-)
