This mighty volcano is one of the most active in all of Central America. You can see it erupting daily with plumes of ash, smoke and sometimes even glowing hot lava!

For the best and safest seat in the house, you can do an overnight hike up the neighbouring Acatenango volcano. Although the climb isn't too technical, it's certainly long and steep, but for a view like this, we think it's totally worth it!

Travel tip: Visit towards the end of Easter Holy Week (Semana Santa) to see intricately crafted multicoloured sawdust carpets called 'alfombras', the most impressive of which can be found in Antigua. Book your accommodation ASAP, though, since hotels tend to sell out in advance.
