Jakarta in $810s-$840s RT

Jakarta is one of those places that often gets overshadowed by a nearby tourism superstar — in this case, it's in the shadow of the ever-popular Bali.

But while this capital city might be a little rougher around the edges, it definitely offers a more authentic experience than you'll find at a resort. It's a fast-paced, bustling town where you're unlikely to draw much attention, so slipping into local spots is that much easier.

And like most big Southeast Asian cities, that street food scene is a feast for the senses. Some Jakarta faves include siomay (steamed fish with peanut sauce), gorengan (various deep-fried goodies), and gado-gado (veggies and tofu drowned in sauce and chili).

Note that these dates are during the wet season, but don't let that scare you off. The rain comes in short heavy bursts and doesn't continue all day. So just pack your poncho, be prepared to duck inside when needed, and enjoy the way cheaper off-season pricing :-)
