Unlike Punta Cana, it's super rare to find decent fares to Santo Domingo and Santiago — and especially during the high season! Both are great cities to visit, especially since you can use them as a jumping off point for harder to reach spots on the island, like the Dominican Alps.

And at least turquoise cenotes and juicy tacos aren't a bad consolation prize if those Dominican flights don't look so convenient to you :-)
