Port of Spain in $300s-$340s RT from the East Coast & Atlanta
Rowboats are so passé, don't you think? These days, we're more into crossing lakes on foot.
Okay, so it's really just one specific lake: Pitch Lake, just 90 minutes south of Port of Spain. The largest natural asphalt deposit on the planet, Pitch Lake is made of tar so thick you can actually walk across it—with a guide from the visitor center, of course.
An old legend says that the lake was formed after a local tribe celebrated a great victory by cooking and eating some sacred hummingbirds. Enraged, the gods opened up the earth and flooded the village with tar, destroying it. Interestingly, this story is backed up by ancient skeletons and pottery found in Pitch Lake, so maybe don't eat any hummingbirds while you're there.
