Shannon, Ireland
in $420s-$440s RT from New York
Fly in on a Saturday, and I might even swing by and pick you up from the airport ;-)
Seriously! Shannon is just a stone's throw from my neck of the woods, but more importantly, from Ireland's most photogenic spots like:
- Cliffs of Moher: 1hr and 5 mins. My favorite walk along the cliffs is by far, Hag's Head, it's less commercialized. If you have the misfortune of torrential rain or heavy mist, give the cliffs a skip, as visibility will be a soggy zero.
- Bunratty Castle: 12 mins. Totally touristy, but in the best way possible, we're talking medieval 4-course banquets and kilted pipers.
- Rock of Cashel: 1hr and 22 mins. Ireland's most famous castle was a major seat of the Kings of Munster, and linked to St. Patrick who converted the Irish King here in the 5th century. Across the road, you'll see Hore Abbey (let's move past the name, please) originally a Benedictine monastery dating back to 1272. Not many visitors come here, so you'll most likely have views of the Rock all to yourself.
- Killarney/Co.Kerry: 2 hours. Tack on a bit of time for inevitable sheep traffic-jams. Wild, rugged mountains, quintessential villages, glimmering lakes, excellent pubs, this is where I'd be spending most of my time if I were you.
- Galway:1 hour and 10 mins. Beaches and trad pubs galore. Spend a day driving the back roads of Connemara and tell me you aren't tempted by Ireland's derelict house grant…
- Dublin: 2 hours and 33 mins. If you must.
